If it’s just personal preference i think I will like whatever I use and that will become the norm for me. Ok great I think I might go for the asiair looks pretty good to me and I will probably be using a apple ipad. There's never been a winner, because it's just a personal choice.Įdited by bobzeq25, 06 August 2022 - 08:26 PM. The topic of the ASIAir versus a Windows computer has been debated extensively here, often heatedly. That said, many beginners think the simplicity of the ASIAir is worth paying that price. They support ASCOM and Windows computers. If you have a problem with your mount and an ASIAir, iOptron will direct you to ZWO for its solution. The ASIAir may interfere with that, a Windows computer won't. I like ZWO equipment, just want to be able to get something else if I choose to. It's designed to work best with ZWO equipment. It doesn't use ASCOM, it uses another system. Widely used, is compatible with just about all mounts (and all cameras). There is a long standing system called ASCOM, which goes in between your equipment and the computer. You will likely want a separate data processing computer, your home computer will work well. I don't want it telling me I can't get some specific equipment. I use that option, because I want my data acquisition computer to be my tool, not my master. Its virtue is that it works with pretty much anything. So it should be fine.Ī small Windows computer, like an old laptop is somewhat more complex, but I think, within your capability.
This person uses the ASIAir with a CEM25, the predecessor to the CEM26. Its weak point is that it only works with a limited set of hardware and software. The ASIAir is simplest, that's its main strong point. There are two good choices for you for a data acquisition computer. The mount is the most important part of a beginning and intermediate setup. The forum is beginning and intermediate imaging. But can I run the asiair plus with the ioptron or are there better ways to run it? Sorry I’ve turned the telescope forum into a mount forum.
My exact software selection is based on my mount and other gear. I am currently controlling a dedicated Windows 10 Pro NUC with my MacBook Pro. One step at a time, and if you have trouble post your issues on CN. Getting this all working is not really that hard.

Lastly if you have a Mac or a Linux computer there are typically drivers for that.

If you have a windows PC nearly everything has a Ascom driver and those are pretty simple to add. A very common system currently for beginners is the ASIAIR which I understand has drivers for the ioptron mounts.

The exact install does depend on what kind of computer and what operating system. Does ioptron use the same software? I think it was asiair plus. Does each different brand of mount use different software or is it all the same for every mount? When researching the zwo am 5 the the you tube tutorial made it look so easy. I guess my concern is about the software used to operate everything when imaging with the ioptron.
